In Times Of Peace And War

in times of war we fall back on our
wits and our skills learned from
generations past, handed down
from your fathers fathers time
to this and onward to your own
offspring and theirs.

we survive and adapt
to loss of sleep and
loss of food, working to help
and to provide for those among us
who cannot provide for theirs
embracing family and tradition

making something small into big
so we may eat and drink, survive
getting ready to accept our fate
and yet holding to a hope
that happiness and peace may
yet come from the ashes of violence

and then to peace that we may plan
to annihilate our enemies with war
the elusive dream of world peace
provided they do it our way and
trade only with whom we say
and give to us our share
